As the majority of all cancers, mesothelioma begins as a single nodule rather small. Progressively, the tumors will continue to expand over the surface of the coating in a spiral shape. At the time that the cancer is fully developed, it spreads very fast to other organs.

The progression of the cancer of mesothelioma is measured in stages that range in scales from one to four. Stage I is the least severe, while stage IV is the most severe. The cancer of mesothelioma presents a few very minor symptoms in its early stages, and it is for this reason that the majority of patients who are diagnosed are at stage III or IV.
