Exposure to asbestos is the primary reason why people get mesothelioma. Almost 80 per cent of the cases are related to exposures that are produced in jobs of occupational. The great majority of other cases are associated with exposure to the mineral in homes, or some type of environmental exposure.
The asbestos fibers enter the body through the nose or mouth, and if the same are trapped in the mesothelium, they can start to cause a damage strong enough at the tissue level. With the passage of time, the fibers are causing inflammation, scarring and genetic changes, for some people this can lead to contracting mesothelioma.
After any type of exposure, it may take months, years or decades without any symptoms. The cancer of mesothelioma is very well known to develop slowly, the tumors caused by the disease may take time to develop between 20 and 50 years.
Exposure to asbestos does not always cause the cancer mesothelioma. In some cases, exposure can cause lung cancer or asbestosis and in some cases it does not cause any type of disease. There are many factors that affect the ability of a person to contract mesothelioma, these can range from the duration of the exposure, the intensity of the same and the genes of the person exposed.
